Orientation Week in USM Kubang Kerian

Hey, guys. It has been a long time since I updated my blog and today I just feel extra wonderful to share some of my experiences and information with you guys. Plus, I still have plenty of free time for the time being before my busy schedule start. To cut short, I have registered in USM Kubang Kerian Kelantan as a health science student in the course named Kesihatan Persekitaran dan Pekerjaan (KPP) or also known as Environmental and Occupational Health. So today, I will elaborate some information on these three main points:

1. What courses are being offered in the USM health campus?
2. What is KPP all about?
3. How do I find orientation week in USM?

Please take note that I am an undergraduate student so this whole thing will just be about degree stuff in USM.

1. What courses are being offered in the health campus?

Firstly, the health campus in usm consist of 3 schools (pusat pengajian ) which are School of Medical Sciences (Pusat Pengajian Perubatan), School of Dentistry Sciences (Pusat Pengajian Pergigian) and School of Health Sciences (Pusat Pengajian Sains Kesihatan ).

In School of Medical Sciences, only 1 course is being offered which is medicine while in School of Dentistry also 1 course is available which is dentistry. On the other hand, School of Health Sciences offers 11 courses which are:

1)Dietetics
2)Nutrition
3)Sports Science
4)Deg Nursing
5)Dip Nursing
6)Biomedicine
7)Audiology
8)Speech and Pathology
9)Forensic Science
10)Medical Radiation
11)Environmental and Occupational Health (KPP)

2) What is KPP all about?

The main concern for us as KPP students is not about how tough this course is but actually more to how should we answer people's questions especially our relatives when they ask what is KPP ><. I need to admit that KPP is kinda unheard of and many people do not even know its existence. It should not be that bad if my course is not as well known as other courses but I just feel terrible when every time people ask me, I need to describe everything from the beginning with the fact that I don't really know everything about this field. I am just a first-year student who wanted to explore and know more about this course. However, the bright side is,  as this is a new field in our country, it offers a variety of jobs in many scopes and you could be one the pioneers to the new branch of this field. Who knows?

Enough of that, let's take a look at what this course is all about. I can't really explain everything but  I will try my best to make it simple but also precise. Maybe I will talk more detail about this topic in my next post. Well, Environmental and Occupational Health is basically about making sure that people who work,( no matter what their field is), safe from any hazards that possibly occur. There are a few types of hazards which are biological hazards, physical hazards, chemical hazards, ergonomic hazards, and psychosocial hazards. To make it easier for you to understand, our task is simply to ensure that the probability of any accidents or incidents to take place in working place is as low as 0. Thus, we need to inspect every aspect that involves the working process from time to time especially the machines that vary from the simplest one to the most sophisticated one. Every detail is important to be evaluated and analyzed. If you guys want to learn more about this, you can go to NIOSH (http://www.niosh.com.my/) or Dosh ( http://www.dosh.gov.my/index.php ) web sites.

3) How do I find orientation week in USM?

I had a great time here. The facilitators are super nice and awesome. They are very helpful and friendly in helping us to experience this new journey. For your information, there are a few things that I need to go through like a medical check-up, documentation processes, and stuff. But, I have never once felt homesick or frustrated as people here as so great. I even got fantastic roommates and brilliant coursemates. Of course, I can't talk much as this is just the beginning, but I am looking forward to more joyful moments ahead.  I am super excited and I hope that I can create a lot of memorable memories here.

That's the end of my post for now. It's pretty long compared to the previous posts and I hope you guys can benefit from it.  =)
